This Privacy Policy explains what information Mirent (“we”, “us”) collects when you use the Mirent apps and website, how we use it, and the choices you have. We keep things simple: we process your documents and audio to provide the service, and we don't sell your data.
1. Who we are
Mirent is a text-to-speech and speech-to-text service operated by Kieu Manh. For any privacy question or request, contact us at support@mirent.io.
2. Information we collect
- Account information, when you sign in (e.g. with Google), we receive your name and email address to create and secure your account.
- Content you provide, documents (PDFs, books), text you enter, and audio or video files you upload or record for transcription.
- Usage & device data, server logs and crash reports (e.g. errors, request timing, device model and OS version) to keep the service running and fix faults. We do not run advertising or behavioural analytics trackers.
- Payment information, handled entirely by our payment provider (see §5). We do not see or store your full card details.
3. How we use your information
- To provide the core service: convert text to speech, transcribe audio to text, and read your documents aloud.
- To manage your account, subscription, and credit balance.
- To provide support and respond to your requests.
- To maintain security, prevent abuse, and improve quality and reliability.
4. How your content is processed and retained
Your content is used only to provide the service. We do not use your content to train AI models, and we never share one person's content with another.
Documents you upload for reading (PDFs and books) are processed to extract their text. The original PDF is deleted from our servers once that is done — we do not keep the file you uploaded. The extracted text is kept in your private library so the book reopens on any device you sign in to, without uploading it again. It is readable only by your own account, and it is deleted when you delete the book or your account. A copy may also be cached on your device so a book you have opened before reopens instantly. Listening needs a connection: audio is generated and streamed on demand, and is not stored for re-use by other users.
Audio and video you upload for transcription is handled differently, because the transcript player needs the original recording to play it back and follow along with the text. We keep a copy of that recording so you can replay it alongside your saved transcript. It is stored privately, readable only by your own account, and automatically deleted after 6 months. You can delete any recording yourself at any time while keeping its transcript, and deleting your account deletes every recording with it.
5. Third-party services
We use the following providers to operate Mirent. Where a provider receives the content you give us, we say so explicitly.
- Google Firebase, sign-in and authentication.
- Lemon Squeezy, our Merchant of Record; processes payments, subscriptions, and applicable taxes. Your payment details are handled by Lemon Squeezy under their privacy policy.
- Google (Gemini API), document understanding. Text extracted from documents you upload is sent to Google to correct recognition errors, identify chapters and headings, and describe figures and tables so they can be read aloud.
- AssemblyAI (primary) and Replicate (fallback), speech-to-text transcription. Audio you submit for transcription is sent to these providers solely to produce your transcript.
- RunPod and Vast.ai, GPU compute for speech synthesis. The passage being read aloud is sent to a GPU worker to generate its audio. These are rented compute providers, not services that keep your content.
- Sentry, crash and error reporting. Configured to exclude personal data: we disable Sentry's default personal-data collection and strip identifiers out of the diagnostics it receives.
- Hosting & infrastructure, cloud hosting and storage used to run the service.
6. Camera and microphone
With your permission, the Mirent app may use your camera to scan text from a page; text recognition runs on your device. If you use voice features, your microphone audio is processed to produce a transcript. We request these permissions only when you use the related feature, and you can revoke them anytime in your device settings.
7. Data retention & deletion
The PDFs you upload for reading are deleted after processing; the text extracted from them stays in your library until you delete the book or your account. Recordings uploaded for transcription are kept so you can replay them with your transcript, and are automatically deleted after 6 months — or sooner, whenever you delete them. Account information is kept while your account is active.
You can delete your account and everything associated with it — transcripts, recordings and account data — from inside the app at any time, or by emailing support@mirent.io.
8. Legal basis for processing
If you are in the EU/EEA or the UK, we process your data on these grounds:
- Performance of a contract, to provide the service you signed up for: converting your documents to speech, transcribing your recordings, and keeping your library and account.
- Legitimate interests, to keep the service secure and reliable, prevent abuse, and diagnose errors.
- Consent, for camera and microphone access, which we request only when you use the related feature and which you can withdraw at any time in your device settings.
- Legal obligation, to keep the transaction records that tax law requires.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live (e.g. the EU/EEA, UK, or California), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email above. We respond within one month, as required by the GDPR.
If you are in the EU/EEA or the UK and believe we have handled your data improperly, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. We would rather hear from you first, but that right does not depend on contacting us.
10. Children
Mirent is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
11. International transfers
Mirent is available worldwide, and the providers listed in §5 process data outside your own country — principally in the United States, and, for the GPU compute that generates audio, in whichever country the rented worker runs. Where we transfer personal data out of the EU/EEA or the UK, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or on an adequacy decision where one covers the provider.
12. Cookies
The Mirent website uses only the cookies needed to sign you in and keep your session active. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics trackers, so there is no tracking for you to opt out of. If that ever changes, we will ask for your consent before setting any non-essential cookie.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, communicated in the app.
